Extensive logging in Grassy Narrows.
Since the decommissioning of the plant, mercury levels have been dropping. However, the First Nations community in Grassy Narrows are impacted by capitalist actions.
Consummatory advisories are still in effect in many areas of the river.
The new “Grassy Narrows Land Declaration” bans all industrial logging in Grassy Narrows’ Territory.
Actions Taken by Government of Canada
Canada is working with Grassy Narrows First Nations to identify and gather more information about contaminated areas of the river and the sediment. In addition, the Canadian government is taking action by implementing their Remediation Plan by collecting data about the contaminated areas and being transparent with the impacted communities.
